Large Material Handling

August 5, 2011

Metal Trades has been using Holland Dollies for several years.  They use the dollies throughout the barge construction process.  "The dollies are particualrly useful for moving barge assemblies in/out of our Blast/Paint Building and for major pairings of large assemblies that will get welded together."

Straddle Mover for 911 Memorial

June 27, 2011

From the heartland of America comes a unique design to plant the heart of the trees at the 9/11 Memorial site in New York City.  Holland Moving & Rigging Supplies or HMR Supplies was approached in 2009 about designing a custom piece of equipment to transport trees weighing up to 10 Tons.  The project was then tabled until fall of 2010 when the customer again called to find a solution to planting the Swamp White Oak trees on the elevated 9/11 Memorial plaza.

Straddle Mover in New York City

Design of the Straddle Mover began in February 2011.  The opening of the 9/11 Memorial for families of the 9/11 victims is set for September 11, 2011.   The timeline necessitated a short delivery time on the tree moving equipment.  HMR Supplies worked hard to design and build the Straddle Mover as quickly as possible.  The support of all the families of HMR Supplies’ employees made this unique piece of equipment possible.

HMR Supplies designed the Straddle Mover to meet the special needs of planting trees on the 9/11 Memorial plaza. It was important for the equipment to be able to carry the tree in the center of all the axles, be capable of traversing sideways and able to negotiate openings on the surface of the plaza.  There are also up to 8 stories underneath the plaza for access, equipment and a museum requiring low ground pressure and a wider tire base.

When you see the Straddle Mover up close, on the 9/11 Memorial webcam or on YouTube, it is an impressive site.  The knuckle suspension is able to lift and lower the frame and load up to 20 inches.  The block and cable system is capable of lowering the load below ground level, and 135 degrees of steering allows the Straddle Mover negotiate the tight quarters on the plaza.  A single operator and a remote control operate the straddle mover.

Bridge Deck Replacement Straddle Mover

Although the Straddle Mover was originally designed for moving trees, it can also be used for bridge deck replacement.  Upgrading bridges has been high priority in the past couple years.  An easier method of upgrading the bridge decking will reduce the down time for bridge repair.

Midstates Convention 2011

March 19, 2011

One of the last remaining model Holland Dollies was auctioned off on Saturday at the Midstates Convention in Rochester, MN.  There are only two remaining now that most likely will not be released for public sale.  Bill Scribner of Scrib's Moving & Heavy Hauling had won the model Holland Dollie with the raffle for the scholarship foundation.  Mr. Scribner graciously submitted the model back for auction to raise more money for sholarships.  Keith Settle of Settle Construction made the winning bid to take the model back to Oregon.

Additional Space

March 10, 2011

The concrete is done in our addition, and we are ready to move in.  The added room will provide a new home to a newly acquired 8' x 25' plasma cutting table and allow us to spread out to accommodate a variety of larger projects underway. Organizing our new space coincides well with our ISO 9001:2008 certification process.

Rental Dollies Move Education Center

February 23, 2011

Several Holland Dollies including power dollies, plate dollies and a power unit arrived back in the yard today from moving an education center for the Omaha school district in Omaha, NE.  The center was moved with its concrete slab intact.  The center of the building had much thicker concrete than the rest of the slab making the move a bit more complex for Scrib's Moving & Heavy Hauling.

IASM Convention Utility Wire Legislation

February 21, 2011

We just returned from the IASM convention in Portland, Oregon.  Everyone had a great time and learned a lot from the variety of safety, business and structural steel seminars.  William Johnson of Anderson Building Movers out of  Prince Albert, SK Canada also gave a good presentation concerning overhead utility wire legislation.  In Canada they have a corridor specifically designated to move oversize loads.  All utility wires must be a minimum of 30 feet in height or be placed underground.  The corridor allows Canada to more efficiently move structures and all the oversize equipment manufactured and transported across their country.  Packets were made available for Relocation vs Demolition and Utility Wire legislation.  We encourage contacting your local and state representatives about these initiatives.

Back from the TASM Convention

February 1, 2011

We are back from the TASM convention where we had a great time.  Thanks to all who put the show on and those who attended!  Clean Emissions Grants were one of the topics being discussed.  Not every state has grants to improve your diesel truck's emissions, but some do.  Here is a site listing some of the states and their programs.  If your state has an emissions program, I strongly encourage you to look at it.  You get to upgrade your equipment and keep the air cleaner for everyone.

150 Ton Hydrostatically driven dolly module

October 29, 2010

Holland Moving & Rigging Supplies announces the development of a 150 ton hydrostatically driven module initially designed for transporting 300 ton bridge tub girders.  Each module consists of two 75 ton Holland Dollies each containing 2 hydraulic lifting cylinders.  Sitting on top of the four hydraulic cylinders is a bolster and turntable.  The turntable allows the dollies to pivot under cumbersome loads while traveling from the factory to the barge loading dock.

In use two 150 ton modules are placed under the load and electronically steered via wireless remote control.  King pin steering allows the wheels to turn at the axles similar to a car.  Articulated and crab steering allows the units to maneuver in tight quarters.

The two 150 Ton modules can be used as an alternative to a standard platform trailer.  Load tracking makes the two independent modules work together as if they were physically connected as one unit.  The rear module uses sensors to track the location of the turntable and adjusts the wheels on the rear module automatically.  This option allows the operator to focus on the front module alone versus trying to control both simultaneously.  Load tracking is most beneficial when traveling longer distances.
